Patch 4.5 hit recently and brought along with it a multitude of changes, some of those were definitely much needed while some of them made me sad (Lee Sin Nerf WHY?!). In this article we’re going to be covering some of the major changes included in this patch and providing you with some insight on what might change in your regular game of league because of this.
First and foremost, the long awaited Rengar rework is finally here. Rengar has been a problematic champion since release with his potential to either completely delete a squishy from the game within a fraction of a second (While mostly building tank items) or his ridiculous split-push potential thanks to his Q (Savagery) doing major work on turrets and then his Ultimate giving him what is basically a “Get out of Jail Free” card if he ever gets caught which made him a very good pick in almost every team composition. The recent changes bring him more in line by making sure he stays in fights longer and has to adapt to situations instead of being a binary pick. His bone-tooth necklace has also been moved to his trinket slot which was a very welcome quality of life change.
Here’re the changes 4.5 brought to Rengar (All changes taken from http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/patch/patch-45-notes):
These Rengar changes will definitely bring a lot more depth to his play-style so you will probably see a huge influx of Rengar picks in your typical solo queue games for a few days until the dust settles. The changes also open up his role selection a bit by buffing his jungling potential so there’s a strong possibility that there will be more jungle Rengars than there are top lane Rengars..
Second major thing in patch 4.5 is the Gragas rework. Gragas was originally designed to be a bruiser-esque mage whose role in the game was to basically cause disruption while dishing out Fighter level damage. This was not the case though, thanks to the extremely high AP rations on his Barrel Roll and Explosive Cast (And the obscene range) Gragas was much more potent as an AP mage who dished out tons of AoE damage, combine this with his low cool-down dash and his innate tank stats, Gragas seemed like a must pick champion in all situations. The most recent changes to him attempt to re-tune his play-style so he’s played like a bruiser as he was meant to.
After these changes, expect to see a lot less Gragas mid play since most people only played him for his insane burst potential but it does open up opportunities for top-lane Gragas or maybe even jungle Gragas which were already fairly strong before this patch.
Another huge thing that Patch 4.5 brought is the whole Rune change, perhaps the biggest rune change was that the armor values on the armor seals were lowered and every champion was given a +4 armor buff to compensate.
Itemization also underwent some serious changes with the addition of Feral Flare (Finally!) which is basically the long awaited upgrade to Wriggle’s Lantern which will finally make it a viable item, especially on Melee Carry junglers such as Master Yi or Fiora.
Here are the stats for Feral Flare:
TRANSFORMUpgrades from Wriggle's Lantern after killing 25 large monsters
ATTACK DAMAGE+15 attack damage
ATTACK SPEED+35% attack speed
UNIQUE PASSIVE MAIMBasic attacks deal 100 damage (reduced by 67% against champions) and heal 10 health on hit. Kills, assists, and large monster kills increase the damage by 3 and heal by 1.
UNIQUE PASSIVE+30% gold from monster kills
UNIQUE ACTIVEPlaces a stealth ward that reveals the surrounding area for 180 seconds (180 second cooldown)
UTILITYWard cast range greatly increased versus normal ward cast range
Along with the Feral Flare, there were also the addition of the Aether Wisp and Forbidden Idol which basically make the build paths to full items a lot smoother. Boot enchantments were also buffed so that people stop building Homeguards all the time and consider other enchantments such as Furor or Alacrity etc.
