Don’t Think Linear, Think Non-Linear
The guys over at Respawn were so gracious to spare some time in this video to let players in on a couple tips on how to success in Titanfall. Some key things they will discuss are how to take advantage of the new gameplay mechanics, how to maximize the value of your Titans, how to take down Titans and how to level up quickly so you can start enjoying better weapons and features.
The temptation is to move and shoot as you would in any other shooter, though Titanfall requires more non-linear thinking. Players of traditional FPS games will fall on the habits of a linear gameplay they are used to which is running up to doorways or corners and peeking out and ducking back, then slicing the pie until you see an opportunity. However, rather than ducking behind cover and maneuvering around obstacles, wall-running allows players to simply go over it. Just remember that wall-running isn’t reserved only for outdoors, which seems to be how most players have been using it, wall-running can be utilized effectively even in small spaces, hallways and rooms. Just imagine you are Trinity in the Matrix, rather than backing away and looking for cover when under attack, aggressively approaching your opponents and wall-running disorient your opponents giving you the advantage since tracking non-linearly is still something most players are just barely getting used to.
Playing Smart With Titans
Titan’s are very valuable to the game progress which is why we so anxiously wait to earn them, however once you get it, resist the urge to go charging in like a bat out of hell. It’s a quick way to get lose that valuable asset quickly. In fact, it is best to think of titans as a tank, designed to sustain the damage and taking the attention off the other players. There is a tendency to think that a Titan is the only means of defeating other sides Titans, however pilots are just as effective if not sometimes even more effective at taking down Titans, so don’t discount the value of being a support as opposed to being always on the offensive.
Counter that Rodeo Cowboy
If you get Rodeo’d which is pretty hard to notice at times in the midst of battle, one of the best options and the first thing to do is to strafe side to side with boosting or slamming in to buildings with your boost which will knock them off, however if you still can’t shake them and it’s getting critical another way to counter them is to jump out and immediately double jump backwards. This should put you right in the line of sight behind pilot for a easy kill. However if you didn’t get them immediately after ejection you can jump once and kick him for an easy instant kill.
Tools For Titan Takedown
Pick the right tool for the job. If you are trying to take down a titan but don't want to get too close, use the Archer Heavy Rocket to lock-on from a distance which can take as much as half their health if not more with each shot. If you are caught in the middle of a firefight or want to take the risk of going in close, then a Sidewinder to deal lots of damage quickly with lots of small rockets. But with this comes risk since being so close you run the risk of being spotted or stepped on. Also remember that if you Rodeo a Titan, be careful about which weapons you use, the wrong weapon might do the job but also kill you in the process.
Smart Pistol, Learn It, Use It
If you find yourself on foot, then a good choice of weapon might be the Smart Pistol. The pistol can auto-lock onto targets which makes it easy to take out grunts with the flick of a button; a very effective way to rack up points in Attrition. Mix it up by trying the Smart Pistol from rooftops and in the air. At first the timing of the Smart Pistol can be challenging but after a while you’ll learn that you don’t have to have the target in your dead center crosshairs, as long as they are in your targeting area they will get locked on. The key is to pull the trigger as soon as you see the red flash that indicates a lock on. Take advantage of those opportunities because locks can be lost in a split second. Also as we said before, don’t focus on the linear traditional gameplay, remember that you can lock on people while sailing in the air or running up walls and fire off kills shots so quickly that you aren’t even looking at them anymore since you already know they were locked and dead.
Focus On AI To Level Up
The quickest way to level-up weaponry and unlock the much-needed accessories is to focus on taking out enemy AI. The AI Grunts go down the easiest and often appear in large numbers. At first you will be more visible with a loud gun when taking down groups of AI so you are going to want to upgrade to a silencer early on so that you can quietly take out AI and level up quicker while staying off the enemy radar.
Hacking the Spectres
Spectres, which are robot AI grunts, are quite a bit tougher but also provide additional XP and game points when taken out. If you manage to get behind a Spectre, then you can use the Data Knife to hack them and make them follow you around the map as your personal bodyguards.
Knife Wall-Hang Tactics
It’s little known and rarely used but a Data Knife can be used to wall-hang by pressing and holding the left trigger when bouncing between buildings. This will cause your player to stab the knife into the wall and suspend in mid-air. A handy trick for the non-linear thinker is while being chased by enemies, you cut around a corner and through a door way, and instead of finding cover, and you can quickly jump up the adjacent wall and hang above the door frame. This allows you to watch them pass by below you, giving you the opportunity to take them out from overhead or behind. Use can also use stealth to give you that extra advantage if you are dealing with more than one opponent.
Execution By Titan Drop
Another tactic is to use Titan drops to your advantage. Many gamers will opt for calling in Titans in a safe secluded area because it’s safer to approach them and embark when they are in a nice area away from the battle. However, Titan drops used offensively can do substantial damage. A drop on a pilot can is an insta-kill, or it can clear entire groups of AI. If you see a crowd of Titans packed together, calling a Titan drop directly on top of them can do substantial damage to multiple Titans and potentially even destroy those already weakened. You do however run the risk of losing your Titan or not surviving along the way to your Titan so it’s a calculated risk that must be thought through carefully.
