As the Rust-Life server began to become over run with hackers and the admins could not do anything to stop it, they began to wipe the server regularly almost weekly. We got fed up with it and started looking for a new server in which we found Avalon run by Avalon-Gaming.com which can be reached at net.connect 18.104.22.168:28055. The server was recently wiped and it had about 10 active players. A bit small for us but it had the potential to grow if we were active and promoted it.
Experience pays off in the make of "The Compound"
Having built 5 major bases on 4 different servers, we felt we had a good grasp on what to do now to make a truly fortified base. We had a list of goals that the base had to meet which were the following:
- It had to be at a good location (close to resources, close to zombies, close to a rad town, and a wide open area) We didn't like climbing through mountains to get to our base and we didn't want to travel far to get what we needed.
- Build wide not tall. In the past just like everyone else you would build tall but tall buildings were always susceptible to raids by makeshift staircases, boxes etc even if you built anti-staircase pillars. Because foundation and ceilings were indestructable we realized that making something wide meant they only one option of breaking through layers of walls to get to the juicy center.
- Spread the loot. Instead of putting everything in a large center area we spread it out into many rooms. We quickly realized that having a central 2x2 or more was not safe. All we really needed was 1x1 blocks since even that could comfortably fit 8 people. Assuming that there would be no ESP we would put Large Storage Boxes into every room, even if we didn't use it we would fill it with rocks, charcoal, anything to stall for time.
- It could cost effectively be expanded up at little cost to create a high vantage point for defense.
- Open space on all sides so people couldn't hide behind structures or rocks when raiding.
The area we settled on was right behind the Civilian Rad Town. We began by building a 4x4 expanding out to a 6x6 and eventually a 10x10. The way we built out was in a spiral going around and around which was good since to add-on any 1x1 in our expansion we only needed 1 foundation, 1 pillar, 1 ceiling, 1 wall, 1 door frame, and 1 metal wall.
We would keep repeating this until we got to our 10x10. No room was bigger than 1x1 and ever single room had 2 to 3 metal doors. After awhile it was like an onion and we would get lost in it all the time but we figured if it was confusing for us, it would be impossible for others.
The second and third floor was a defensive facade, it looked there was more but there wasn't it was hollow with windows for shooting. We then expanded out from that and surrounded the entire structure with metal structures, however because metal had to be a certain distance from wood and the ground was uneven we ended up with scattered segments of metal 1x3 or 1x2 which had to be connected with large wooden gates. We then surrounded the entire base with large spike walls leaving open only 2 entrances backed by 3 large wood gates each.
Much later in the game we began to build up approximately 8 or 10 stories and created towers at each corner and then eventually we connected them to create a halo at the top of our base, perfect for sniping. Our base had become so huge that people would spawn on our roof with no way to get out and we would simply tell them to suicide. Also with every day cycle we found at least 3 to 5 resource nodes spawning inside our limit walls.
Admins attempt to raid our house of horrors.
The first raid attempt on our base was by a couple of friends of the admin. A guy named Corbs and Ruckus. I was out farming and when I returned home I realized that two of the metal walls and one wood wall was destroyed. It was pitch black and I was in farming gear (essentially nothing) so I ran in though the open hole and eventually got lost myself. I could hear them talking "I have no idea where I am, I'm lost" "Where are you?" I quickly told my friends who immediately F1 suicide to return to their rooms.
BigJerms appeared in his room which happens to be where the two raiders were waiting and they immediately killed him. John Lemon however was in the next room which they had not reached yet so we suited up and waited for them to blow up his door but just as they blew it up he sees them both fall down into the ground where the foundation had been. Mind that our foundation was over the height of 1 story at that part of the house due to the elevation. So they both fell into the gaping hole.
We were dumbfounded and immediately thought they were hacking and we killed both of them and immediately notified the admin. It turns out they had their admin tools on and while trying to destroy our sleeping bags they had instead destroyed the foundation and were now trap because the primary admin "Peasent the Unruly" didn't gave them edit powers only and not TP powers.
BigJerms was totally pissed and accused them of abusing admin powers and disconnected. Peasent the Unruly however started yelling at his friends and apologized profusely assuring us that it was really just a mistake. However, we always wondered how if we were not there to witness it for ourselves, they just could have easily blown through doors and walls with admin powers and quietly fix it all back up with no one ever being the wiser.
After everyone calmed down and Peasent repaired the damage, he revoked the admin powers of everyone but himself and we decided to rebuild. Surprisingly they weren't able to take much at all in the raid. They were able to blow through a total of 10 doors, 1 wood wall and 2 metal walls, but the first 4 cells they got through had only rocks and bandages, 3 of the bed rooms they got through had only 1 set of Kevlar, leather and 1 of each weapon but no bolt-action rifles. And even so we got back all of it since we had killed them while they were stuck under the foundation.
It turns out that the wide design worked wonderfully. Even after the admin repaired the base and TPed the raiders back in to talk, they had no idea how to get out, even with all the holes they had made they still found themselves constantly hitting dead ends and empty rooms so the admin had to TP them out just to simply it.
Meet Rek The Fallen - The asshole disguised as a dick
At this point we had become a pretty big force, yet we were still relatively friendly, focusing primarily on farming to further build up our defenses. Then while farming one of our group members Three3 gets killed by a fellow named Rek the Fallen.
He had approached Three3 while he was farming naked and called him out to stop. Three3's naturally reaction was to run and that's when Rek the Fallen began shooting at him, eventually killing him. Rek again kills 2 more of our members and becomes put on our KOS (Kill on Sight) list.
Rek the Fallen then approaches our gates and says he wants to make a truce. He claims that he is with a big group and they are pretty mad that we have been killing noobs and new spawns which is a complete lie since we always farm naked with only a bow and arrow. He then insists on going inside our base to speak but I tell him there is no need to go in to speak, we can speak perfectly fine through the gate. He continues to press on that if he can see inside it would be a sign of trust.
Finally I replied that trust doesn't need to be established by seeing in side this base, if he leaves us alone we'll leave him alone. Also that he has mistaken us for someone else since we are fairly friendly. I even ask them to give example of who killed who of which he can't and then says they say you killed someone. That's when I laugh and say "I pretty much stay at the base all day, my team brings back resources and I only process and build. In fact through out my week of playing here I've never killed anyone, check the logs, ask the admin, clearly you are a liar and you are look for someone to blame to have an excuse to instigate something."
Later on in the day he returns and again insistent on going in to speak to our group. Again I tell him there's no way he's getting in here and if he wants to talk he can wait for my group to get back from lunch to talk. He then ask how long will it take? I say maybe 10 or 15 minutes. He confirms and then leaves. However, in no less than 3 minutes he returns again and this is when things start going down. The following is a full transcript and play by-play of what happens next.
Massacre at Mystic
Rek The Fallen: So I had a talk with my group and I'm here to make you an offer, you can either surrender your base and give us everything, or we can blow the walls and come in and kill everyone.
Nam: So this is your idea of being friend and peaceful, No thank you.
Rek The Fallen: Ok, I guess we'll just kill all of you then.
Nam: Hahaha ok, I'd like to see that.
Rek backs away and retreats to the hills and I immediately call my friends on Mumble who were in fact eating lunch to jump on immediately. We immediately begin to take positions at each tower corner and they begin to come down from the hills shooting at us from the mountains or circling around us like lambs to the slaughter, but luckily we were lambs with really big guns in a really big box. All the while, we still were waiting for that booming sound of explosives as he had so threatened us with but all we heard were grenades. The skirmish lasts about 15 to 20 minutes with an average of 1 to 1 kill ratio before they finally retreated. We then checked the base perimeter and much to our surprise not even a single walk was destroyed. After the chat silence due to the attack we finally start seeing it light up with conversations.
Rek The Fallen: Fuck you pussies, you lied you said they were at lunch!
Nam: Does it say anywhere that I have to tell you the truth, that didn't stop you anyhow from your real intention of raiding us. The fact is they really were at lunch. They shot you with one hand while eating with chop stick in the other, that's how bad ass we are.
Rek The Fallen: Well you're the ones killing noobs and you can't just own that entire area, we need to farm too.
Nam: We never said you couldn't farm and again we didn't kill anyone, you are just using that as an excuse to come attack us. You come here with your false pretenses of being friendly and as soon as you see the opportunity your turned.
Nam: This is just like the Massacre at Mystic, you're like those British prick who come here to our land, where our people have been for a long time and lived peacefully and you want to take it all cost so you come all friendly but you plan on killing us all from the very start.
Rek The Fallen: Fuck you I am British and I'm not a prick.
Nam: Meant that as a metaphor, you actually being British is just a coincidence. Would you rather I make a Nazi reference for you?
Nam: Any how you are full of lies, no one should trust you. Leave us alone and we'll leave you alone.
Rek The Fallen: Fuck You, we're getting off.
And with that, he and his raiding party of 5 log off, but it wouldn't be the last we see of him, of course we'll come back may times in the future groveling, being peaceful and then quietly helping others raid us. Somehow I feel the game truly does amplify who we are in real life. I myself and most of my friends are pretty nice, friendly people so in the game we tend to be passive, reclusive, and highly defensive. Rek The Fallen is probably a dick, a conniving dick at that who can't be trusted and in the game he's an even bigger asshole.
